Can you bring your household goods to Argentina duty-free?

Some laws let people who return or move to Argentina bring their household goods without paying import duties and taxes. Whether you qualify depends on who you are and your situation. This check tells you what we found in the official texts, what is missing, and what to prepare.

• Returning Argentines — Ley 25.871 art. 103 and RG AFIP 3109/2011Argentines who lived more than 2 years abroad may import their household and personal effects (no value limit), their work tools and one used car free of import duties, taxes, fees and other charges. The goods arrive between 3 months before and 6 months after you, through a customs broker; the benefit can be used once every 7 years and the goods cannot be transferred for 2 years.
• Foreigners with permanent residence — Ley 25.871 art. 15 and RG AFIP 3109/2011Foreigners admitted as permanent residents may import personal and household effects (no value limit) and one used car free of import duties, taxes, fees and other charges. Pensionados and rentistas hold TEMPORARY residence (Ley 25.871 art. 23 b, c), so until they obtain permanent residence their goods can only enter under temporary admission.
• Diplomatic and international staff — Decreto 25/1970 (updated by Decreto 235/08)Accredited diplomats, consuls, international-organisation staff and administrative or technical staff who are not Argentine nor resident import objects for personal use and for their installation with a total customs franchise: import and export duties, taxes and special contributions are waived; only the statistics and destination-check fees remain. Administrative and technical staff only at first installation and within 180 days of arrival.
